1. Background
Prior literature treated the anal munchkin as folklore, a cafeteria rumor, or a typo in a proctology abstract that nobody had the nerve to correct. Field notes from the Franklin Basin Sitz Bath Array (2024–2026) contradict this. The organism is real in the only sense that matters to a laboratory: it changes the numbers if you leave the room.
Taxonomically it sits between a dust mite, a union steward, and a very small mayor. It has no limbs that we are willing to count. It has opinions. Those opinions are exclusively about experimental design, and they are exclusively negative.
2. Methods
Subjects (n = 40 chairs, 12 of them office, 28 of them personal) were equilibrated at 21°C and a humidity we refuse to disclose. Each chair received a standardized hypothesis written on card stock and placed, per protocol, where a hypothesis should never be placed. Observers sat adjacent and maintained eye contact with the wall.
2.1 Inclusion criteria
A munchkin was scored as present if at least two of the following occurred within nine minutes: a soft administrative sigh with no human source, a 0.4°C rise in seat temperature, or the spontaneous correction of a decimal point.
2.2 The extraction fork
Removal was attempted with the Blalock fork, a stainless instrument shaped like an apology. Success was defined as the munchkin leaving of its own accord while pretending it had never been there. This did not happen.

3. Results
The munchkin constant μ (mu, unfortunately) stabilized at 0.73 loafs per hypothesis. Heavier hypotheses attracted larger munchkins, until the hypothesis concerned grant reporting, at which point the organism left to file a complaint with itself.
| Condition | Dwell (min) | Audit notes filed | Outcome |
|---|---|---|---|
| Control chair, empty | 0.0 | 0 | Unsettling calm |
| Hypothesis, mild | 6.2 | 1 | Decimal “fixed” |
| Hypothesis, funded | 18.9 | 7 | Budget reclassified as snack |
| Extraction attempt | 41.0 | 14 | Clench Paradox confirmed |
| Apology issued | 2.1 | 0 | Organism unconvinced |
Secondary finding: anal munchkins cannot metabolize praise. They can metabolize a Gantt chart. We do not know what becomes of the Gantt chart. Carbon balance remains open.
4. Discussion
We propose that the anal munchkin is a seat-borne reviewer evolved to punish confidence. It is not hostile. Hostility would require it to stand up. It prefers to remain, slightly off-center, until the investigator admits the study design was “a little much.”
Limitations include observer blush, chair recall bias, and the fact that two coauthors are no longer speaking after Experiment 9 (“the lavender glove incident”). Generalizability beyond upholstered surfaces is unknown. Laminate appears to offend them.
Future work will test whether a second munchkin can be introduced as a control, or whether that simply constitutes a committee.
